Modern Media Console: Case Joinery

The case is coming along nicely. I’ve completed the dovetails and fit the mitered ends. I used a whats referred to as a ramp block to make the mitered corners perfect. I cut a large block and 45* and clamped it to the workpiece. I used the surface as a reference point, and with a really sharp chisel I paired away the waste from the rough saw cut. This feature allows me to run an edge profile continuously around the front edge of the piece and to hide the rabbet cut in the back of the case for the back panel.

I decided to soften the look and feel of the case a bit by pillowing the front edge of the case. Rather than the edge being flat and square, the corners are rounded over slightly just enough to make the piece more inviting to the touch. I think this will be an appreciated feature as this will be in a home with kids.

In preparation for the back panel, I cut a shallow rabbet around the back of the case. This will allow a frame and panel back to be glued in place which will make the case rock solid.

Next up will be finishing the interior of the case and installing the shelf. Stay tuned!
