Modern Media Console: Glue Up and Doors

Things are really shaping up! I was able to glue in the shelf and back, and applied final coats of finish to each.

With these parts complete, I was able to move on to the frame and panel doors. These are made with what’s referred to as a haunched mortise and tenon. The panel sits in a 3/8″ deep groove along the frame, but since these doors will be used regularly, I cut a deeper mortise where the rails connect to the stiles. This will ensure a door that lasts a lifetime.

I chose to make the panel almost the same thickness as the door frame with only a minor reveal of the tongue which makes for a modern take on a traditional construction method.

Next up is installing the invisible hinges and then finally the base. I’m in the home stretch now!
