Memorial Garden Bench

Highlights

This memorial garden bench was commissioned in memory of my client’s late husband. I am honored to craft such a meaningful piece and I took great care in the design and craftsmanship to build a piece that is beautiful, comfortable and will last a lifetime.

The bench features straight lines and angles blended with classic, gentle curves to give it a timeless form and comfort. The curved back legs and angled back rest provide comfort and shape to the piece. The front legs feature a swept back arm support which accent the angle of the back rest and curves on the bottom of the back leg. The arm rest is wide at the front for comfort and provides plenty of room for a drink to rest. The arms taper with a gentle curve to the back leg and have a relief cut out which wraps around your body when you’re sitting on the end. The large, gentle curve on the crest rail adds shape and interest and provides space for the memorial information. The memorial information was wood burned into the bench with caligraphy.

The bench was constructed with extra large mortise and tenons and reinforced with heavy duty exterior screws. All of the screws were plugged to conceal the fasteners.

The bench is made of Sapele which is in the Mahogany family and is extremely rot resistant. It has a deep red color tone and is well known for its ribbon patterns in the grain. I finished the bench with teak oil. This oil is specially formulated for dense outdoor species such as Teak, Mahogany, Sapele, etc. and will provide excellent water resistance and help maintain that deep red luster. With a little pressure washing and re-application of oil each spring, this bench will continue to be a stunner for years to come.

  • Species: Sapele
  • Joinery: Traditional joinery reinforced with mechanical fasteners
  • Finish: Teak oil

Design Options

If you are interested in this piece, consider these options to customize it to meet your needs:

This bench was made 6ft wide to accommodate up to four adults at once, but could be made into a 4ft width for two people.

The crest rail could be shaped differently to match your aesthetic. It could be left straight or more ornate details could be added.

As with most pieces, you can choose the species of your choice to achieve the color you want. However, with outdoor furniture, we would want to use a rot resistant species. Mahogany, Sapele, Cedar, White Oak and Cypress are a few commonly available species that would work great in a piece like this.
