Modern Media Console

Highlights

This media console was designed to house a record player, amplifier and records. Its aesthetics are heavily influenced by the James Krenov’s case on stand design. The client’s wanted a unique piece with a modern design so I chose premium materials and added small details to provide interest and character.

The main case is made of curly maple and joined with through dovetails with mitered corners. This allows the front edge of the case to feature a thumbnail profile which softens the look and feel of the modern design. The shelf, which will house the amplifier, is joined with a sliding dovetail which provides additional strength to the case and helps keeps the side panels flat over time. The back features a frame and panel construction with shiplap panels and a vented panel on top to allow for cords and the electronics to cool.

The doors are frames and panels with a modern design. The panels are only slightly thinner than the frame which results in a flush look with a small gap between the frame and panel.

The base is made of mahogany joined with mortise and tenon and has interior rails which lifts the case up from the exterior rails making the case appear to float.

Design Options

If you are interesting in this piece, consider these options for customizing it to meet your needs:

This piece was designed for a specific purpose. The dimensions may be modified to house the items being stored in it. For example, the unit could be made wider and include compartments for speakers or additional electronics.

You may also consider different materials to match your home’s design and color scheme.

My husband and I spent a considerable amount of time trying to find a piece of furniture to hold our record player, receiver and records.

We also planned for the piece to be something we passed down to our children, so we were prepared to pay a premium to acquire something high quality.

Since record players aren’t common, we didn’t have much success from high-end boutique shops, they were either too large or in a style we didn’t care for.

We reached out to Whitehurst Custom Woodworking to commission the piece with specific dimensions, layout and quality already in mind.

In terms of style, we wanted something that looked modern, but we had trouble articulating specifics which concerned us.

Whitehurst Custom Woodworking was very patient with us, helping us make decisions about overall style, materials and finishings.

The finished product blew us away, it is incredible to see the idea come to life.

The craftsmanship is stunning and the guidance we were given designing the piece made us feel very taken care of.

We couldn’t be happier with our decision to use Whitehurst Custom Woodworking and are already inquiring about commissioning a set of dining chairs.
