Outdoor/Shower Bench

Highlights

This bench was designed as a shower seat with storage shelf. Its base is made with mortise and tenon joinery, and features splayed and tapered legs for a bit of aesthetic appeal and sturdiness. Two slatted frames make up the seat and shelf. The perimeter frame of each are joined with bridle joints with the slats joined with mortise and tenons. Since this piece will be wet, it was finished with a coat of teak oil and two coats of butcher block oil/wax blend so the finish can be rejuvenated easily throughout its life. I epoxied the bottom of each legs where the end grain is prone to soaking up moisture. The epoxy seals the feet of the piece to help prevent water damage over time.

Design Options

If you are interested in this piece, consider these options for customizing it to meet your needs:

Although the dimensions of this piece are smaller to fit in a shower, consider increasing its size to accommodate two or three people and place it outdoors on your patio, deck or garden.

White oak is an excellent budget friendly choice for exterior furniture as it is readily available and naturally rot resistant. However, there are many other species to choose from, some more exotic, such as Mahogany, Teak, Ipe, Cypress, and Cedar just to name a few. Choose a species that appeals to your color pallet.

This design also lends itself well to functioning as an entryway bench, perfect for sitting down to remove your shoes and storing them underneath. A solid wood top could be substituted for a more comfortable seat indoors.

Wow we are so impressed with the quality of this work!! Better than we could have imagined, and at a fair price.

We were looking for nontoxic furniture and commissioned a bench for our shower, a cat litter cabinet and repair of antique furniture.

Super impressed by the owner’s creativity – he’s up for any challenge!

We weren’t sure what the process would be like but Jeremy walked us through everything. We were given options and clear insights into what to expect. Couldn’t be happier with the outcome of our pieces!!! We’ll definitely be back.
